Success = People + Plan

Above all else, the success of any project rests on two things: the people and the plan. While this may seem obvious, studies have shown that the majority of IT projects fail. Why? After a project fails, there are always very specific, logical reasons cited. We are told to learn from our failures, but failure often generates rationalizations instead of wisdom. Most projects fail because of deficiencies in either the plan or the team.

With the right plan and the right team, success is inevitable:

A Plan is not a Gantt chart: an idealized picture of how the future might be if everything goes perfectly. It is a battle plan: a detailed strategy to assure success given that every assumption will be challenged. A Team must have anchors at the key positions: individuals with the skills, experience, intensity, and focus that it takes to lead the role players and charge toward the goal regardless of the challenges.
